Update on Future Road Repairs

Deep Patching of Roads

According to the Mr. Foster, Hancock County Manager, "The road consultants have been out measuring quantities for 2025 LRA which includes the main roads (Sinclair Drive, Island Creek, Oconee Drive and Lake Crest Drive) for deep patching this year.  It will be put out to bid in the next couple of weeks if all goes as planned. He went on to say "With 500 miles of road (250 dirt and 250 paved, it is a challenge to address all of them. Plans are to work to keep working different areas of the county and addressing what we can."  He then added, "Feeder roads are on the radar...."

Dumpsters in Transition at all sites this Week of Labor Day

Ryland to Manage the Dump sites

According to Adrick Ingram, Dumpsters will be replaced at ALL sites this week.   Ryland to manage the sites. HOWEVER, the dump site on Carr's Station (East Lake area) is owned by Baldwin County.  I noticed that the dumpsters belong to Waste Management.  The new dump manager at this site is Chris.

Update

2025 County Budget & Mill Rate

The Hancock BOC approved a budget of $15,738,369.40 and voted to implement the mill rate for 2025.  Here is the breakdown of the announced millage rate for 2025 compared to 2024:

  • 2024 Mill Rate:
    • BOC 22.626
    • BOE 14.13
    • Total 2024:  36.757
  • 2025 Mill Rate
    • BOC 22.556
    • BOE 14.087
    • Total 2025:  36.643

This is a reduction of 0.114 on the total mill rate from 2024 to 2025 which is not much considering we were all hopeful the new board would be able to reduce spending to create a bigger impact.

The HCPOA officers are still committed to sending letters and making phone calls to try and find someone in a higher state office that is willing to listen to our concerns and help us put pressure on the commissioners.  I think we all would like more transparency as to where our tax dollars are being spent.

During the budget process it was evident that they did not change much in the way of how they classify things and there is still a lot of room to improve in the area of miscellaneous/contingency being a category.

We encourage you all to keep attending meetings if you can. You don't have to speak for your presence to make an impact to the commissioners.

Continuing Research for Development

Through civic engagement with ACCG, GMA, DOAA and The Carl Vinson Institute of Government UGA we are gaining resources and knowledge to better equip our organization in the challenging and multifaceted efforts of governmental oversight. Pertinent items that help frame context and points of reference, for us having little experience in these areas, will be shared with our fellow citizens as we continue learning.

Below is an exemplary budget shared by ACCG as a model for other municipalities. We provide it here for comparative analysis and educational opportunity. Please share your thoughts with us or county administrators and elected during the upcoming meetings.
